NABC Research Grant Program

PURPOSE
The NABC is sponsoring ten yearly research grants with a maximum of $1,000 each. They are designed to:

  1. Provide positive incentives to basketball coaches to further their profession:
  2. Encourage basketball-related research.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to receive a grant from the NABC, the individual applying must be a member of the NABC and fulfill one or more of the criteria listed:
  1. Be a full-time coach at the secondary school or college level.
  2. Have a serious interest in basketball research.
  3. Conduct research or do a thesis as part of an advanced degree program.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The following schedule should be followed for application and acceptance of all proposals:
  1. The proposal should be submitted to the chair of the NABC Research Committee prior to March 15. The applicant will supply ten (10) copies for circulation to the Research Committee.
  2. The proposals will be forwarded to the NABC Board of Directors with the recommendation for approval/disapproval from the Research Committee at the spring meetings.
  3. The NABC Board of Directors will notify the applicant after action has been taken on the proposal; usually after their regular summer meeting.
  4. Awarding of the grant will be done by the NABC Board of Directors upon successful completion of the study and notification by the chair of the Research Committee.
  5. The author of the research will provide and abstract to appear on the NABC web site (www.nabc.com).
THE PROPOSAL
The proposal will contain the following:
  1. Description of the study.
  2. Scope of the study.
  3. Time frame in which the study will be accomplished.
  4. Hypothesis.
  5. Evidence of preliminary research.
    • Pilot study
    • Bibliography
  6. Budget (cost of the study).
  7. Vitae of the proposer.
GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATION OF RESEARCH PROPOSALS
In evaluating requests for NABC research funds, the NABC Research Committee shall utilize the following guidelines:
  1. The scope, quality, adequacy of design and methodology, and scientific merit of the proposed research will be considered.
  2. The proposed research should be pragmatic in terms of practical application of results or production of useful knowledge for the NABC membership and the sport of basketball.
  3. In studies involving surveys, a statistically valid sample, resulting in national data or projections, will be considered essential.
