NABC Announces 2007-08 Honors Court

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) today announced the NABC Honors Court recognizing those collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics. The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court, and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. In order to be named to the Honors Court, an athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:

The Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced that it strongly opposes 10th grade students and younger from making commitments to collegiate institutions for the purpose of playing men's basketball. Furthermore, the Board asks men's basketball coaches to refrain from offering or encouraging these young people to make such commitments.The Board of Directors' opposition is based on the fact that these students have not yet displayed sufficient academic credentials or, in the vast majority of cases, basketball maturity to accurately project them as admissible students to the institution or impact players on the basketball team.

Ga. Tech coach livens up Knight Commission meeting

Georgia Tech basketball coach Paul Hewitt turned a tedious discussion of numbers into something lively. Amid questions and answers about grade point averages, graduation rates, surveys and APRs on Tuesday morning during a routine Knight Commission meeting, Hewitt turned on his microphone and chided the reform-minded panel for making "incomplete conclusions" and taking "a fly-over view of the supposed carnage that is college basketball." "While I like to see everyone who reaches college earn a degree," Hewitt said, "we need to find more effective ways to achieve our goals."

Whitman Selects Bridgeman as Head Coach

Eric Bridgeland, who polished his coaching resume by winning three consecutive Northwest Conference titles earlier this decade, is the new men's basketball coach at Whitman College.

Bridgeland replaces Skip Molitor, who left the coaching ranks this spring after 33 years to become an assistant athletic director at Whitman. Bridgeland, 37, coached most recently at NCAA Division I Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.

Jarvis Back as Florida Atlantic Coach

-Mike Jarvis found a home in Boca Raton four years ago. Now, he's got a job to with it. Jarvis was introduced Tuesday as the men's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic, returning to run a program for the first time since St. John's fired him six games into the 2003-04 season. University trustees still must formally approve the hiring, a process that now seems little more than a formality. Jarvis' four-year deal almost certainly will become official Wednesday. "This is our town," said Jarvis, who has worked as a columnist and commentator since departing from St. John's. "This is going to be our story."

BUCKNELL NAMES PAULSEN AS HEAD COACH

Dave Paulsen, a two-time National Coach of the Year who led Williams College to the 2003 Division III national championship, has been selected as the head men's basketball coach at Bucknell, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced Tuesday. Paulsen, a 1987 Williams graduate and a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, has coached at every level of college basketball over the last 20 years, has won 68 percent of his games as a head coach, and is considered a highly sought-after consultant on the principles of the motion offense.

The announcement was made Sunday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation.The ceremony will be held at the College Basketball Experience (CBE) and Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., which opened in October, 2007.
